When you hear Clay Pot Rice or Bo Zai fan, it is a well-known dish to many people from Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. Alex, the Clay Pot Rice restaurant owner, knows that many Chinese living in Calgary miss Bo Zai Fan.
But how do you make Bao Zai Fan? The rice is pre-soaked and finished in a clay pot with the ingredients cooking together to give the rice its rich aroma and flavour. Alex mentions that his Bo Zai Fan is cooked to get the super crispy rice bits at the pot’s bottom.
When the Bao Zai Fan comes to your table, the hot pot and the hot food is enough to warm your heart and soul (you don’t even need to put soy sauce on it)! When you first sit down with the menu, you are able to choose from three types of Bo Zai Fan: the two topping, three topping, or seafood supreme. Each bowl is served with rice (of course!), a braised egg, broccoli, tofu, corn and a sprinkle of scallions on top. Next, you have a variety of topping choices! For example: pork ribs with black beans, chicken with mushroom, Chinese sausage, pork belly, and even frog legs (a rarity and super delicious)! Why not add one of their delicious drinks to compliment your Bo Zai Fan as well? They have plenty of refreshing fruit teas, smoothies and milk teas to complete your meal.
When you first step through the door of Clay Pot Rice Restaurant, you’ll be taken in with its artistic, manga-inspired decor. There’s an arcade machine with over 1000 retro games available for you to play after your meal, and all you have to do is ask for some tokens! Another reason you must visit this restaurant is that your food is delivered to your table by a friendly robot server! Alex says they are the only Calgary restaurant serving food in this innovative way during these times.
So head on over to Clay Pot Rice and enjoy that nice, crispy rice!
